McConnell/ Remirez Weekend
Hi Everyone!
I know it's been a while since posting anything on here, but I figured I would try to start it up again! So this weekend in an effort to further my dog training know-how, I attended a weekend long seminar put on by Dogs Of Course!. The guest speakers for the seminar were Patricia McConnell and Ken Remirez. They each had a day to themselves and the days were entitled For The Love Of The Dog: Emotions in You & Your Dog, and How They Affect Training and Relationships / From Purgatory to Nirvana: The Path To Enlightened Training.
I was most excited to her Patricia talk since I had yet to hear her speak and loved several of her books. And I can tell you she didn't disappoint! She kept things interesting and up-beat. I won't go into what she taught just because people are so uppity about what you post any where that the last thing I need is to get in trouble for posting to much info! haha!!!! But I can tell you that personally I found her amazing and can't wait to hear her speak again. I picked up a few of her books while I was there and can't wait to start them.
I didn't enjoy the second day with Ken as much. He was a GREAT speaker! But I had actually heard a lot of what he said today already when I heard him speak at Clicker Expo when it was in RI recently. That and I think being woken up by a roaring train at 3 a.m. and having my brain filled for 8 hrs the day before didn't really help. I did find his talking about secondary reinforcers much more interesting and helpful then I did about his talking on problem solving ( again because I had already heard it and was craving something new). On the whole it was a good talk but I think it could be much better when given to a group of people with their level of experience & skill being the same as opposed to being generalized for a large group of people with mixed levels of skill, which was the audience at this weekend.
All in all it was a wonderful experience and I can't wait to be able to do something similar again. If any one is interested in going to seminars to further their knowledge on dogs and training a great place to start looking is dogsofcourse.com. Hope to see you at something in the future!
Good Night All!!!!
